College Football Playoff goes on without Ohio State, and so does Dems Swinney of Clemson

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State Football will not play in the 2020 College Football Playoffs after the Big Ten chose to cancel bankruptcy sports.

Yet even with 40 percent of the Power 5 conferences not attending this fall, the CFP selection committee announced Thursday that it will remain on its normal course for the 2020 season. Unless more conferences close, it is likely that the commission still plans to announce a playoff of four teams on December 20th.

Fans of Ohio State will surely remember the legitimacy of each national championship, crowned without the team ranked No. 2 in the question of the presidency coaches. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, whose team has played in four of the last five playoffs, believes a true national champion can still be crowned.

Swinney’s Tigers defeated OSU 29-23 in last season’s Fiesta Bowl in the CFP semifinals.

‘Whoever wins, wins it. That’s the champion, ”said Swinney. “… someone wins a championship, so maybe it’s a shortened season. Maybe it’s not as many teams as anything. But you believe best that whoever wins it should deserve it.

“No one will give anything to anyone, so you can only control what you control. We just hope we have the chance to play. “

Ohio State will not. As of Thursday, the ACC (including Clemson), the Big 12 and the SEC will all continue to play in the fall of 2020.

The selection committee of the CFP has also adopted a business as usual position.

“We do not know at this time what the season will bring, but as a committee we are ready to use the protocol and expertise of the 13 people charged with selecting the teams,” Iowa Athletic director and commission chairman Gary Barta said in a news release.

“The task of the commission is to rank the teams based on what is happening on the field. This week gave us a great opportunity to pick up the familiar faces and welcome our three new members to the process. If the council and management committee say we have a CFP, we will be ready. ”

Of course, Barta’s Hawkeyes belong to one of the conferences that will not participate in the CFP race this autumn. The other is the Pac-12, which canceled fall sports the same day as the Big Ten.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced Thursday that the organization will not hold bankruptcy championships until 2020. However, that does not affect the CFP – an independent running process outside the NCAA’s oversight.
