Antibodies in the blood of people infected with the new coronavirus can persist for more than half a year, TASS reported, citing published results of a study by the Finnish National Institute of Health and Social Development.

“A significant proportion of those infected in the spring so far have had a significant amount of antibodies in their blood,” the publication said.

So far, more than 1,100 people infected in the spring have been included in the study. The first blood samples for antibody testing were taken in early November, BTA reports.

In 91 percent of the results analyzed, so far antibodies have been found that neutralize the virus. Neutralizing antibodies were found in the 129 study participants who had severe Covid-19 and required hospital treatment.

“This is a promising finding. The discovery of neutralizing antibodies could be a sign of longer-term protection against new infection,” said study leader Merritt Melin.
