On October 12, we honor the memory of one of the most righteous Christians, whose relics still work miracles today. Saint Martin, called the Merciful, was bishop of the city of Tours in Gaul. His parents were pagan, but from a very young age Saint Martin had the opportunity to learn about Christ and his teaching on the salvation of the soul. Therefore, the modern secular education he received did not satisfy him. His soul yearned for other knowledge. San Martín’s father forcibly sent him into the army so that he could save his son from his dreams of becoming a hermit and so that military discipline would make him wise.

One cold winter day, a half-naked beggar was sitting by the city gates. Seeing the poor man waking up from the cold, San Martín took off his cape and cut it into 2 parts. He gave one to the poor man to warm up and wrapped the other around himself. At night, San Martín had a wonderful dream. Jesus Christ appeared to him wrapped in that part of the cut cloak that the good warrior gave to the poor and suffering. In the morning San Martín woke up full of joy, and the first thing he did was receive Holy Baptism, because until then he had not been baptized. San Martín still managed to dedicate himself to the Almighty and left the army.

Gone are the years he spent in prayer and deprivation, until one day the Holy Spirit filled him with a plan to found a monastery. Many monks gathered in the new monastery, full of desires to serve the Lord. Throughout the years, San Martín received episcopal ordination. He was elected bishop of Tours. As bishop, Saint Martin went to great lengths to eradicate pagan customs from Gaul (present-day France) and introduce Christianity.

Because of his diligence and humility, the Lord endowed Saint Martin with the power of a miracle worker. The most notable example is the incident with a leper. Saint Martin went to Paris on business. Near the city gate there was a leper, who smelled unbearable and everyone fled from him. Without disgust, St. Martin walked over and kissed the man. In front of everyone’s eyes, the leprosy disappeared in seconds. The healed man went to the temple and began offering prayers of thanksgiving to the Almighty for his health.

The believers began to call Bishop San Martín Merciful because he showed an enviable Christian charity towards everyone. San Martín lived until he was 80 years old, when the Lord took his soul to heaven. This happened on October 12, 400. From the first days when the mortal remains of Saint Martin were deposited in the tomb, innumerable miracles began to happen to the believers who came to worship him.
