American scientists have analyzed the transmission statistics of the new coronavirus infection. They found that a person was more likely to be infected at home, given that one of the family members was already infected with the coronavirus. The results of the study were published in the journal JAMA Network Open.
The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of articles published last year that mentioned cases of secondary transmission of COVID-19 when patients were infected at home.
The level of risk of secondary transmission is influenced by factors such as the time elapsed since the initial infection, the duration and proximity of the contacts and the degree of appearance of the symptoms in the first infection.
Infections in the home are reported to be more common in adults than in children (28.3 and 16.8 percent, respectively, and in spouses, compared to people simply living under one roof) 37.8 and 17.8 percent.
The average level of secondary infection in the coexistence between two people is significantly higher than in households with three or more inhabitants: 41.5 and 22.8 percent, respectively.
