Britain reopens temporary hospitals built at the start of the pandemic and closes primary schools in Londonto counter the rapid spread of the much more infectious variant of the coronavirus, Reuters reported. The announcement comes just days after the Royal London Hospital told its staff via email that it was already in “emergency medicine mode” and unable to provide high-level intensive care.

The temporary Nightingale hospitals at the convention centers were built by the military in a matter of days. They were hardly used, but remained on hold. However, the Royal College of Nurses has warned that there are not enough nurses in the country to care for the new hospitals, especially those with many patients or forced to isolate themselves.

With more than 50,000 new daily cases of COVID-19 in the last four days, the National Health System (NHS) said it was preparing for an expected influx of patients and needed more beds. Given that the capital is one of the areas most affected by the new strain, which is up to 70% more contagious, the government has also decided to close all primary schools in London, reversing a decision taken just two days ago.

“The education and well-being of children remain a national priority,” the education minister said. Gavin Williamson, who on Wednesday outlined a plan to postpone the reopening of high schools. The opposition Labor Party said the last minute change would wreak havoc on parents.
