Sofia is about to close almost completely due to the third wave of coronavirus. After a meeting with the Minister of Health and the heads of the large hospitals, the head of the RHI in Sofia, Dr. Dancho Penchev, announced that they would propose to close schools, kindergartens, restaurants, bars, shopping centers, gyms, cinemas and theaters to Sofia headquarters on Friday. The measures will apply to the city and the district. The final decision will be made by the Sofia headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Penchev, the situation in the capital is serious. Earlier, the director of Pirogov, Professor Asen Baltov, told BNR that it was time to think about closing kindergartens and restaurants for at least two weeks. He explained that the number of infected children is increasing and some of them require hospital treatment.
“We are almost at our limit and more serious measures need to be considered. Perhaps younger children should be considered. Unfortunately, they may also have to temporarily suspend education and kindergartens. The number of young newly infected patients continues to rise“he said.
Sofia’s restaurants opened on March 1. The kindergartens opened on January 4.
Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova announced that the situation in the city has worsened and there is an increase in the number of children admitted to hospital with a coronavirus infection. They are mainly housed in the Pirogov and ISUL hospitals.
The proposal for new and stricter measures comes in the context of constant assurances from Health Minister Kostadin Angelov that everything is under control. Earlier in the week, the number of new cases reached November levels, when 4,800 new infections were recorded per day. During the last 24 hours, 4637 positive samples were reported. 187 people died.
Starting today, hospitals in the capital must provide another 20% of beds for covid patients.
At the same time, mass vaccination was stopped after Prime Minister Boyko Borissov decided to wait for a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency on the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine after a death in Plovdiv.
According to the head of the vaccination headquarters, Professor Krassimir Gigov, there will be an opinion on Wednesday.
“I did not have chaos and there is no stoppage, there is a temporary postponement of the process and this is due to reasons beyond our control. That is because AstraZeneca has launched a campaign against him, related to several cases that are not really and in my opinion are not really related to the vaccination process … This policy will continue in some countries. We hope that after the European Commission issued an official opinion, we are waiting for it tomorrow, there was a preliminary opinion… We are waiting for our Bulgarian specialists from Thursday to Friday to give their conclusions. In my opinion, I will say again, I am not compromising anyone, a coincidence between the death of this patient, unfortunately, the condolences to her relatives, and the vaccination process ”. explained to BNR.
A day earlier, Angelov commented that immunization with the product could start again on Thursday.
