Protected by faith: This is how the residents of the Raina Knyaginya district of Yambol accepted the situation with COVID-19 until recently. “We are not afraid, we are not afraid. We fear only God. We clean with bleach. Thank God we are healthy,” shared one of the residents of the neighborhood in front of Nova TV.

A month later, the gendarmerie and the police supervised the order in the Roma neighborhood.
The COVID-19 outbreak literally erupted days after the first case of a 55-year-old neighborhood resident. In the late afternoon of May 4, health authorities isolated part of the neighborhood.
“They showed understanding, we explained to them what this situation requires and I hope there is no tension, for now it is calm,” said Yambol Mayor Valentin Revanski.
Hopes for responsible behavior did not materialize. Three days later, the entire neighborhood woke up under lockdown, and the district hospital in Yambol faced an epidemic.
“The situation is stagnant, but it’s under control. I don’t want it to sound discriminatory, but 90% of our patients are from there. If this negative trend for hospitalized patients continues, we can handle a maximum of 7-8 to 10 days.” said Dr. Dimitar Runkov, attorney for MHAT “St. Panteleimon
The hospital registered a shortage of doctors and medical personnel, more serious than ever. “We need at least five doctors to run a schedule and at least 8 to 10 nurses. A resource that we cannot allocate. If we redirect nurses from other wards, we must stop the emergency, which we only cover in the Yambol region,” said Dr. Valentin Valchev, Deputy Director of MHAT “St. Panteleimon
The Mayor of Yambol donated two of his salaries to the front line doctors at the hospital. So far, however, only one other mayor, that of Topolovgrad, has responded to his call for volunteers. The other thing Yambol relies on is the massive testing in the neighborhood. However, detection of the coronavirus is about to fail.
“I don’t know why, but positive family members’ contacts avoid PCR testing.” It is difficult to give to a person when they do not want to take it, “explained Yambol regional governor Dimitar Ivanov.
The explanation turned out to be leaflets with a fake Ministry of Health logo. Its content agitates people so that they do not allow a test and do not wear masks. On the seventh day, the area remains under quarantine. From 14 streets you can only go out to visit a doctor, buy prescription drugs and with an official note from an employer. However, the blockade did not reassure residents in the neighboring Georgi Benkovski neighborhood. According to them, neighborhood residents found a way to circumvent the ban.
“In my opinion, solving the problem in Roma neighborhoods requires serious state pressure and slightly stricter measures,” said Revanski. The mayor demanded that the state stop social benefits for violators.
