IN Poland reported a record 1,002 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, while neighboring EU states Lithuania and Slovakia also posted the highest numbers in a day since the pandemic began, AFP reported.

The data for Eastern Europe is in line with the increase in cases in Europe since August, which has led many countries to return to tighter limits.

“The figures we see now are the result of people returning to their normal daily life, returning to work,” said Polish Health Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andruszewicz.

“This is what we see on the streets every day: more people, more contacts,” he told the Polish news agency PAP.

In neighboring Slovakia, a country with a population of 5.4 million, the latest of 290 new infections has led to a total of 6,500 cases.

“Now we have a new record. Today the situation is turning critical,” Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic wrote on Facebook.

“However, if we remain responsible, we will live in relative freedom despite the pandemic.”
