The new strain of the coronavirus, which first appeared in Britain and is considered much more contagious than the one circulating so far, is suspected of having penetrated Romania as well, information site Ziare reports.

A spokesman for the Matthew Balsh Institute in Bucharest, Catalin Apostolescu, said today that two samples analyzed in the genetics laboratory had given different reactions to the previous ones. The spokesperson clarified that for now it is only a suspicion.

Earlier today, doctors from the Matthew Balsh Institute told DJ 24 television that a new strain of the coronavirus had been found in a man who had recently returned from Britain. The person was hospitalized at the Matthew Balsh Institute.

Institute spokeswoman Catalin Apostolescu did not specify whether the two “different” samples were from the same patient and whether they were a person returning from the UK, Ziare said. According to Apostolescu, the exact data will be known early next week.

“In fact, in the institute’s genetics laboratory, two samples showed different reactions than what we have known so far. In the next few days we will see if this is really the new strain of the virus,” the spokesman said.

Romanian health authorities announced today more than 3,000 new cases of Kovid-19, identified in the last 24 hours, Ziare said. After processing 9,829 coronavirus tests, 3,034 newly infected people were identified, bringing the total number of infected people to 640,429 since the start of the pandemic.

The number of Kovid-19-related deaths per day is 60, and its total number since the start of the pandemic is 15,979.

1,119 patients with coronavirus infection were treated in intensive care units out of a total of 8,868 hospitalized with Covid-19. 574,897 have recovered from the disease (BTA).
