Horror in Shumen: Two Babies Test Positive for COVID-19

The critical situation in Shumen hospital has not been overcome, although the medical institution has the opportunity to open more beds for coronavirus patients. The big problem is that there is a lack of doctors to treat the growing number of patients. Among them are doctors.

There are currently more than 80 confirmed coronavirus patients in the hospital. There are babies among the patients. There are three large and two smaller centers for treating infections.

Our only difficulty is in terms of staff: more than 50 nurses are dedicated to treating only covid patients, explained Dr. Dimitar Kostov, director of MHAT-Shumen to BNT.

He explained that so far doctors from other medical institutions have not responded to the call for help.

However, there is a collaboration with the Varna Hospital and four patients have already left for treatment there. This is our emergency plan, explained the director. We do not lack protective equipment, Dr. Kostov is categorical.

We are something like “Pirogov” in Shumen, because we are the only hospital in the district that accepts emergency patients, he added.

According to him, there is the option to redirect patients with other diseases to the Novi Pazar hospital, but the capacity of the health center is small. Furthermore, Shumen Hospital mainly accepts emergency patients for whom there is no option of transfer to another hospital.
