The 81-year-old former Swiss president died in a hospital in the southern town of Locarno, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, “after complications from the coronavirus,” a local newspaper reported.

A lawyer by training, Flavio Coti was a member of the Christian Democratic Party in Ticino. He spent 12 years in the federal government from 1987 to 1999, during which time he assumed the presidency twice on a rotating basis, in 1991 and 1998.

Yesterday, the Swiss health authorities announced, quoted by TASS, about more than 5,600 new cases of coronavirus and 89 died in the last 24 hours.

The total number of infected registered in the country with a population of more than 8.5 million people is close to 395 thousand. The death toll is nearly 5,800.
