The Ulus market in Edirne, popularly called the Friday market, frequented by Bulgarians on weekends, remains closed until further notice due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Two weeks ago, Edirne authorities took an epidemiological measure to close the market for two weeks due to the critical increase in coronavirus cases in the Edirne region compared to the first wave of the epidemic.

According to health experts, Edirne is among the most critical areas in Turkey in the spread of the coronavirus.
After two weeks, the market remains closed until further notice.

Last Friday (December 11), many Bulgarian citizens came to Edirne to shop, but were surprised that the market was closed, local media reported.

Some time ago, local health experts warned that the influx of shoppers, mostly Bulgarians, to the market on Fridays violated the epidemiological measure of physical distance.

The deputy governor of Edirne Ali Uysal pointed out that markets, shops and vehicles are the most risky for the spread of the infection between people, which is why they had to close the largest market in the city, Ulus.

In fact, the Friday market in Edirne is an important element for local merchants and the economy of the city and the region.

According to the Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, some 4,500 Bulgarian customers visited the market on the Friday before closing.

On each visit, Bulgarians bought products for around 150 euros per person, which generates 675 thousand euros / about 6.5 million Turkish lira / daily profit.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced last night that 29,136 new cases of Kovid-19 infection had been identified, of which 5,203 were patients with symptoms, bringing the total number of infected in Turkey to 1,809,000.

222 people died of coronavirus in Turkey on December 12, bringing the total death toll to 16,199 since March.

The health authorities do not report in figures the situation in the different districts of the country. / BTA /
