We insist that measures against COVID-19 before the holidays should not be eased, said Dr. Ivan Madkharov, president of the Bulgarian Medical Union.

It is inflexible that there is no decrease in the number of patients in our country, nor in the number of people in the intensive care unit. “For us, any relaxation of these measures would be risky for the health system immediately after the New Year,” Madkharov said.

“If the number of infected people in hospitals continues to grow, we will reach cases like those in Italy, where there was a closure of ventilators to give them to another person. Let’s be in a tighter circle during the holidays, “Madjarov added.

The manager of the National Health Insurance Fund, Prof. Dr. Petko Salchev, expressed a specialist opinion that the measures should be extended at least one week after the New Year holidays.

The BMA president said doctors welcomed the decision to equate antigen tests to some extent with PCRs, as they are essential for rapid patient identification.

The Ministry of Health has agreed that as of November 1 (retroactively) healthcare professionals who are employed by general practitioners will also receive additional funds worth 360 BGN per month.

The Minister of Health, Kostadin Angelov, clarified that today there will be a meeting of the Supervisory Board of the National Health Insurance Fund, which will include the proposal for additional money. “I count and believe that the supervisory board will support today’s decision in light of the gesture we make to healthcare professionals,” Angelov said.

“These measures and the others, announced so far for the financial support of the workers of the first line, will also obtain their sustainability next year”, Madjarov is categorical.

The different units also agreed that a representative of the BMA would join the National Operational Headquarters for the Fight against Coronavirus.
