More than 600,000 Bulgarians are expected to be without health insurance by the end of the year. This follows from a written response from Finance Minister Kiril Ananiev to a question from a group of BSP deputies.

Due to the economic crisis in the country, the number of people who do not pay health contributions is expected to increase by around 70,000 in 2020, the newspaper Trud said.

People without health insurance are not entitled to free treatment in state and municipal hospitals. But many people without health insurance use emergency rooms because they cannot be denied treatment in an emergency.

All Bulgarians in the country are subject to compulsory health insurance. Bulgarians who live and are insured in another EU country are not subject to medical insurance in the country. This also applies to their family members, is clear from Minister Ananiev’s reply.

To determine the number of people who must pay for health insurance but do not, there must be clarity about Bulgarians abroad. To this end, a nationally representative sociological survey was conducted among 1,350 households, using data from European institutions and Eurostat.

On this basis, an assessment of uninsured Bulgarian citizens was carried out, as well as a forecast of a change in their number over the years. At the end of 2019, the total number of Bulgarians without health insurance is 527.7 thousand. If we add the foreigners in the country without insurance, their total number is 678.7 thousand. In relation to the epidemic emergency situation, which affects the health of uninsured citizens, by the end of 2020 the number of people without insurance is expected to increase by 15%, said Minister Ananiev.
