The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RFDI) said on Wednesday that the candidate vaccine against Covid-19 “Sputnik V”, developed by the Federal Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology “Gamalea”, has shown an effectiveness of 92% in the prevention of coronavirus infection.
According to the RFDI, interim data from the first 16,000 study participants showed that the chances of becoming infected with the coronavirus were 92% lower than those of those who received the expected two doses of the Sputnik V vaccine.
The initial results are only the second, published in the latest phase of human trials amid global efforts to produce vaccines that could stop the pandemic, which has already killed more than 1.2 million and devastated the global economy, according to Reuters.
Russia registered its Covid-19 vaccine for public use in August, being the first country to do so, although the approval came before the start of a full-scale testing process in September.
“Based on the data, you can see that we have a very effective vaccine,” said RFDI chief Kiril Dmitriev, adding that this is the news that the vaccine developers will one day speak with their grandchildren.
However, independent experts note that knowledge of the Spunik V test design and process protocol is low, making interpretation of published Russian data extremely difficult.
Earlier this week, Russia’s Health Ministry said the vaccine was more than 90% effective in treating the virus, a statement made shortly after Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their Covid-19 vaccine candidate had also shown more than 90% efficiency.
