The government is introducing new reforms to the Law on Measures and Actions during the State of Emergency, which will once again extend the validity of identity documents.

Thus, its validity will be until January 31, 2021.

“By the end of this year, the validity of a large number of ID cards and passports expires, respectively, their replacement is near. This means that a large number of citizens will have to replace them in a complicated situation. To avoid the risk of spread of contagious disease and preserve the life and health of the employees of the Ministry of the Interior, we propose this change, “argued GERB deputy Krassimir Tsipov in the proposal.

In accordance with current regulations, the validity of all personal documents that expire in the period from March 13 to October 31 of this year is extended for 6 months. The government proposes to extend this period until January 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, it has become clear that by the end of the year, Germany will allow foreigners whose passports and identity cards have expired to leave the country when the issuing state has announced that it is extending their validity.

In connection with the coronavirus crisis in the spring, Germany announced that it accepts the proposal to recognize as valid Bulgarian personal documents expired after March 13, 2020 with which our compatriots can leave the country on their way home, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

The three Bulgarian consulates in Germany, at our embassy in Berlin, as well as at our general consulates in Frankfurt and Munich, accept documents for the renewal of expired Bulgarian passports and ID cards.

This deadline expires on December 31, 2020, after which Bulgarian citizens with expired personal documents will not be able to cross the German state border.
