The United States government last night signed a $ 486 million agreement with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to develop and supply up to 100,000 doses of the new drug to treat COVID-19 with antibodies, Reuters reported. A drug of the same type was used to treat President Donald Trump after he became infected with the coronavirus last week.

The United States health authorities will grant AstraZeneca for two phase 3 clinical trials aimed at accelerating the use of the new therapy and the development of vaccines against COVID-19.
One trial will consist of evaluating the safety and efficacy of the experimental therapy in preventing infections. It will last 12 months and will have about 5,000 participants. The second will evaluate advanced treatment in already infected patients and will include around 1,100 participants.
AstraZeneca plans to deliver up to 100,000 doses starting this year, and other than that, under another agreement, the US government may receive another million doses in 2021.
Trump was treated with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals after falling ill with Covid-19 last week, and in a radio interview last night he said it was this experimental therapy that saved him and insisted on its swift introduction into mass medical practice.
