Bulgarian authorities report a record 436 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus, which were detected with 5,400 tests. Positive tests represent just over 8 percent of all samples taken.

With a prolonged increase in coronavirus infections, it is possible to introduce new measures, the Head of State Health Inspectors, Prof. Angel Kunchev, told BNR.

“Obviously this is the expected second wave of autumn. Another question is how quickly it will develop, how intensive it will be, so as not to allow the health system to be so overloaded that it cannot meet the demand for healthcare,” Kunchev said .

With a further increase in those infected with Covid-19 in our country, it is possible to introduce additional measures, Kunchev added.

“Of course, some additional restrictions, if this growth rate continues, should be discussed and introduced, but I immediately want to assure you that they will by no means be in the spring pattern with blocking large settlements,” he said. he ..

Regarding the large number of hospitalized patients, Associate Professor Kunchev said that at the moment there is no danger to the health system, since at this stage around 10-12% of the beds designated for Covid-19 are occupied.

The second wave is coming

National Operational Headquarters mathematician Nikolay Vitanov announced Wednesday that a second wave of the infection is imminent. According to him, November will be critical. “We have to endure to get through the winter relatively well,” he told Nova TV.

His forecast is that by the end of October the number of infected will reach 25 thousand people, which seems too optimistic in a context of more than 400 infected a day.
Vitanov says the proportion of infected in intensive care units remains relatively stable, with the absolute number not expected to exceed 120. By the end of October, hospitalized residents are expected to reach 1,200.

He reiterated that if the newly infected exceed 500 per day, the health system can tolerate this only within 2-3 weeks.
