American doctors have reported a reinfection with the new coronavirus at a military hospital in Virginia, Reuters reported.
The reinfected is a young man from the hospital staff with no side effects. He fell ill for the first time in March and was infected with a patient. He recovered in 10 days and returned to work “in excellent health,” reports BTA.
The second time he was infected by a family member after 51 days.
Genetic testing shows that the first and second time you were infected with slightly different strains of the virus.
The second illness was more serious either because the strain was stronger or because contact at home caused a higher viral load. It is also possible that the antibodies to the first disease caused a stronger reaction of the immune system.
Cases of reinfection with the new coronavirus are still rare, but as with other viruses, said Christian Anderson, a professor of immunology and microbiology at the Scripps Institute.
“We do not know the frequency of reinfection with the new coronavirus and how it may change over time. Without further research, we cannot conclude what a single case of reinfection means for the duration and strength of immunity in Kovid-19 and its importance for future vaccines “.
