Scammers impersonating RHI employees and stealing homes

A new fraudulent scheme in the context of people’s fears of being infected with COVID-19. The scammers pose as employees of the capital’s health service and thus easily gain access to private homes. Most of the time they went to expensive properties in elite neighborhoods. And once inside, they steal what they can.

The plan is new and still unknown to the police. The Regional Health Inspectorate informed NOVA about two of these cases, in a cooperative in Boyana. The perpetrators are currently unknown. The victims could not even recognize them because they were wearing masks and protective suits.

A few days ago, two men in protective suits, with masks and glasses, appeared in front of a building in the neighborhood. Once opened, they introduced themselves as RHI employees and entered the property without issue.

Everyone thought they were there to disinfect against COVID, so no one asked for their IDs. One of the families later learned that jewelry was missing from their home. Other neighbors have a broken door. The victims immediately called RHI and discovered that the men had not been sent by them at all.

“The man who called me asked why our employees did not identify themselves and entered without showing up. I replied that we do not have that service and we do not do such disinfection, “explained Violeta Mineva, call center at SRZI.

After the case, the block is adamant that they will increase security urgently.

Following an investigation by NOVA, the police stated that they were unaware of such a fraudulent scheme. RHI asked people to be vigilant and clarified that its employees do not have the authority to enter private homes.

“RHI is responsible only for sites of public importance and they are subject to the Health Law, and residential buildings do not belong to this group,” explained Ruslana Petrova, PR of SRZI.

Panic and fear after a pandemic make people twice as careless and trusting, psychologists explain.
