The biggest mystery surrounding the new coronavirus is a matter of genes.

Scientists in the UK will study the genetic material of thousands of people infected with KOVID-19 to find the answer to perhaps the biggest mystery surrounding the new coronavirus: why some don’t even realize they are infected, while others have a deadly disease.

35,000 people will be evaluated

To this end, the researchers want to compare the genetic code of people severely infected with KOVID-19 with the genetic material of people in whom the disease has passed very slightly or even without any symptoms. The genes of 15,000 people with mild symptoms and 20,000 people who have been or are still in the intensive care unit after being infected with the new coronavirus are expected to be tested.

Scientists say that while we still know very little about the new coronavirus, one thing is obvious: for some it is deadly, while others don’t even feel infected.

“We assume that genes will help us understand in which cases and exactly how this disease leads to death,” Kenneth Bailey, head of the study, told Reuters.

“I would bet my house that we are dealing with a powerful genetic component,” added the doctor.

The first results are expected very soon.

British Health Minister Matt Hancock has already asked his compatriots to join the study. “The goal is to create a scientific portrait of this virus,” said the minister.

The first results are expected in a few weeks. They will summarize the research of some 2,000 people currently underway, said study leader Kenneth Bailey, adding:

“The probability of dying from an infection depends largely on your genes, far more than the probability of dying from heart disease or cancer.”
