While riding a bike outdoors is at the lower end of the coronavirus risk spectrumGetting an indoor exercise bike definitely has become a more attractive prospect in recent months. In the video above, I decide to build my own exercise bike instead of spending more than $ 2,000 on a Peloton.
Bicycle Trainer to the Rescue
I borrowed a bicycle from a friend and I already had a smartphone, so all I needed was a bicycle trainer. I chose this $ 116 option by ProRide because it had good reviews, it came with a phone holder and the color was Lifehacker green.
Setting up the bike trainer took just 10 minutes, and after plugging my phone into the handlebars and turning on the Peloton app, I went to the races.
Compared to a platoon
Was my DIY bike going to give me the $ 2,000 Peloton experience? Of course not. But for a fraction of the price, it worked better than I expected.
The coach kept the bike stable and I only noticed some wobble when I pedaled as fast as I could. The resistance knob had options ranging from 1 to 6, but you didn’t notice a big difference between the highest and lowest settings. I have a feeling that problem could have been solved by pressing the screwing the trainer that controls how close do you press against the rear wheel.
There were other minor drawbacks in my setupLike the lack of a water bottle holder, but at the end of the day, I wasn’t expecting the fancy heights of my $ 120 solution.
