Alex Cruise, chairman and CEO of British Airways, will step down as chief executive of the airline, the parent firm IAG announced on Monday that Sean Doyle, chairman and CEO of Air Kings, will return to power after a transition period.
“We are exploring one of the worst crises in our industry and I am confident that these insiders will ensure that the IAG emerges in a strong position,” Luis Gallego, the IAG’s chief executive, said in a statement.
Coronavirus outbreaks have hit air travel unprecedentedly, with the epidemic stabilizing the industry.
More than 40 airlines have failed so far this year, and aviation experts expect more to follow next month.
“I thank Alex for everything he has done on British Airways. He worked tirelessly to modernize the airline during his 100th anniversary celebrations. Since then, he has been in the air especially during the demand period and with the vast majority of employees,” Have undergone a restructuring agreement.
Cruz, who began his career with American Airlines, became chairman and chief executive of British Airways in April 2016. He had previously been CEO of Vueling since 2009, when he merged with ClickCare, a 2006 cruise.
The IAG said Cruz would remain as non-executive chairman of British Airways. Doyle, the airline’s CEO, has been with the company since 1998.
Doyle has held various roles at British Airways, having previously been appointed Director of Networks, Fleet and Connections in the airline’s Executive Management Committee in 2016.
Doyle became Air Lingus chief executive in January 2019.
IAAG’s Gallego said Sean Doyle had worked there for about 20 years before becoming head of Air Lings at British Airways almost two years ago. I am confident that will continue on British Airways.
Shares of IAG fell 0.2% during the morning trade, replacing the previous gain.
The IAG said Level’s chief executive Fernando Candela will join the group’s management committee in a new role of chief transformation officer.
The IAG said Donald Moriarty, the current chief corporate corporate affairs officer at Lerling, would become the airline’s interim chief executive, adding that the permanent appointment would be announced in due course.
