The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said in a press release on Wednesday that processions and rallies could not be held in the capital without permission. Criticizing the decision, Jafrullah Chowdhury said: “People will not be able to move. Police must be informed to hold demonstrations.” But if you want permission, you don’t give permission, it is a well-known fact. Don’t let anyone greet you, don’t let them talk, don’t criticize, it’s not good. So I ask DMP to reconsider this ban.
Jafrullah Chowdhury further said that to maintain law and order, the police must be informed before the meeting. But the government is responsible for all the chaos. And he added: “Today, on the one hand, the government has helped to create a sculpture problem, on the other hand, when it sees that it is not going to be handled, this is the situation.” At that time, he urged the government not to interfere with individual freedom.
Civic unity protest
Meanwhile, Mahmudur Rahman Mannao, the convenor of Citizens’ Unity, protested against the ban on gatherings without permission. “The DMP directives are unconstitutional and completely undemocratic,” he said today in a statement. The ban imposed by the undemocratic government through the DMP goes against the constitutional and fundamental rights of the people, another tactic to kill democracy. He demanded the withdrawal of the DMP decision.
