Ignoring all requests and protests, Iran has executed fighter Naveed Afkari. The 28-year-old wrestling champion was sentenced to death by a nationwide court for killing a security guard during a protest. His sentence was carried out in Adelabad Jail in Siraj. Several human rights organizations and international players’ organizations have protested against the ruling.

Naveed was accused of killing a security guard during anti-government protests in Iran in 2016. They were protesting against the country’s economic troubles and inflation. Naveed’s two brothers were also jailed for cooperating. Notably, the president of the United States himself, Donald Trump, asked Iran to avoid the execution of Naveed.

The name of the security guard who was killed by Naveed was Hasan Tarakman. “If you save the life of fighter Naveed Afkari, I would especially appreciate it,” President Trump wrote in a Twitter message urging Iranian leaders. However, the Iranian government did not grant these requests.

A WPA statement condemned the incident, saying: “Naveed was one of thousands of Iranians who spoke out against the economic crisis and inflation in their country.” But the Iranian state has mistreated a popular sportsman who participated in a non-violent protest calling for human rights.
