Workers at the East West Limited factory in Gazipur held a protest demanding wage arrears.
Police and factory workers said the factory had about 3,500 workers. They have half of last November and the full salary remains in December. Today they were supposed to pay their wages. But the workers started protesting at noon because they hadn’t been paid since the morning. They blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway near the factory around 11 a.m. Subsequently, the factory owner spoke with representatives of the workers and the police.
The employer promised to pay the arrears on Monday, November and December 20. The workers continued the blockade as they did not accept any more demands. Some more demands from the workers were accepted by the owners. Later, around 5 p.m., they left the road.
Some factory workers said they were owed half of the last allowance for the Eid festival. They were not even given the 5 percent Corona incentive money. The authorities have threatened to fire workers if they request arrears.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (Media) Deputy Commissioner Zakir Hasan said that vehicles heading to Mymensingh were asked to navigate east through Mirerbazar via the Bhogra ring road on the road from Tongi Station to keep traffic flowing normally. Vehicles going to Dhaka are asked to go through the Bhogra ring road and go through Konabari-Chandra. This also increases the pressure on these roads, creating long queues of vehicles.
