Cargo ship workers have called off the ongoing strike demanding 11 points, including payment of the food allowance. Thursday (October 22) at a meeting held in the Secretariat of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, President of the Bangladesh Shipping Workers Federation. Shah Alam announced the withdrawal of the strike.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of State Labor and Employment, Mannujan Sufian, and was attended by the government, boat owners and union leaders. The indefinite strike of the ship’s workers began at 12:01 on October 20 to claim 1 point. Eight organizations of the Bangladesh Transport Workers Federation called the strike. The ship’s workers pulled out of the strike following the owners’ demand for a food allowance.
At the meeting, the president of the Maritime Transport Workers Federation said that what we got was incompatible with the price of the goods. Even then, in the current situation in the country, we are accepting it and withdrawing the strike.
Chowdhury Ashiqul Alam, the federation’s general secretary, said: “We regret that the state was embarrassed by the three-day strike.” My call to the workers is that they begin to work with double illusion.
Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (Passenger Transport), said an agreement had been reached between workers, owners and the government. We want to maintain friendly relations between employers and workers.

According to the decision, from October 1, workers on ships with a capacity of zero to one thousand tons will receive a monthly allowance of one thousand rupees. In addition, workers on ships with a capacity of 1,001 to 1,500 tons will receive a monthly alimony of Tk 1,200 and workers on ships with a maximum capacity of 1,501 tons will receive a monthly alimony of Tk 1,500, the state minister said. He also said that an agreement has been reached between the shipowners and the workers on the matter.
Shipworkers’ 11-point demands include stopping extortion and theft on all vessels and waterways, including bulkheads, paying wages to all levels of shipworkers according to the gazette announced in 2016, providing landing passes, and food allowances for Indian-bound workers, fix sea and night allowances for all ship workers.
