Twenty-two employees have been suspended for allegedly withdrawing Tk 18.29 lakh from the provident fund by forging the signature of the municipal mayor of Jhalokati. Municipal Mayor Liaquat Ali Talukder suspended the 22 employees on Monday afternoon.
An 11-member investigative committee was formed under the direction of the municipal mayor. The committee presented its investigation report on November 23 declaring the truth of the incident. The mayor wants to know the answer before 10 am on November 26 with a notice to show cause to employees on November 24. Although the accused employees answered them in writing, it was not satisfactory and the authorities decided to suspend them by holding an emergency meeting in the municipality.
The investigative committee noted in its report that the mayor’s signature with future funds had been forged. Evidence of this is found in the bank statements of the reward and future fund accounts. The report further notes that during questioning by the investigation committee, the employees reported that Milon Hawlader and Mortuza Ali, the trucker’s assistant, signed their checks and took them away. Kabir Hossain, a resident of the West Jhalokati area of the municipal city, helped sign the forgery.
