Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law died after consuming poisonous cookie curry in the Uttar Bharaura area of Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar. A seven-year-old boy is being treated in the hospital.
The incident took place in the Uttar Bharaura village of upazila on Wednesday night (December 23).
The deceased were identified as Shahida Begum, 40, wife of Joynal Abedin from the village of Uttar Bharaura and her daughter-in-law Nurunnahar, 22.
Naeem (6), the young son of the late Nurunnahar, is being treated at Srimangal Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.
According to police sources, Farida Begum used to build a house on one side of Gias Mia’s house in the rented area north of Srimangal with her three sons and a daughter-in-law. On Wednesday afternoon, a fishmonger went home with a biscuit and bought him fish. The fish was cooked and eaten by mother-in-law Farida Begum, daughter-in-law Nurunnahar and seven-year-old Nayem.
When they fell ill at night, they called a village doctor and received treatment. The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law died later that night. The injured boy was rescued and admitted to hospital.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Srimangal Police Station, Abdus Chalek, confirmed the incident, saying: “Some cooked fish has been seized for analysis. The body has been sent to the morgue of a 250-bed hospital in Moulvibazar for autopsy.
