Police arrested two defendants in the suffocation case of a widowed beggar named Hasila Begum (41) in Dhunat upazila de Bogra. They were sent to the Bogra District Jail from the Dhunat Police Station on Saturday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Hasila Begum, daughter of Shukar Ali Mandal of Ghugrapara village under the union of Kalerpara of the upazila.

The arrested defendants are Badsha Alam, 28, the son of Shamsul Mandal from Kachugari village in Anarpur and Fazlul Haque, 32, son of Badu Mandal from Anatapur Hattapara village. They are autorickshaw drivers by profession. Police raided the house on Friday night and arrested them at their respective homes.

According to sources in the case, Hasila Begum’s husband, Azahar Ali, died about 24 years ago. So Hasila Begum lived in his father’s house. Halisa Begum, mother of one, used to earn her living begging. After this, Hasila Begum pleaded on October 12 and returned home in the evening to visit the house next door. After that, Hasila did not return home at night.

The next morning, Hasila’s body was found in an empty field near the house. Police and locals believe that he was strangled by criminals with a handkerchief around his neck. Hasila Begum’s older sister, Dhuli Begum, filed a murder case with the Dhunat Police Station. However, no defendants were named in the case.

Dhunat Police Inspector (investigation) Kamruzzaman Miah said that Badsha Alam and Fazlul Haque were arrested based on a list of calls on the mobile phone of the late Hasila Begum. During preliminary questioning, they confessed to being involved in the murder. The defendants have been sent to jail by the court for a seven-day pretrial detention to find out if anyone else is involved in the murder.
