A widowed beggar named Hasila Begum (41) has been strangled to death in Kalerpara, union of Dhunat upazila de Bogra after failing to rape her. The two arrested defendants have pleaded guilty in court to murder under section 164.
The defendants are Badsha Alam, 28, son of Shamsul Mandal from Anarpur Kachugari village in Kalerpara, union of the upazila, and Fazlul Haque, 32, son of Badu Mandal from Anarpur Hathatpara village. The defendants are GNC autorickshaw drivers by profession.
The investigating officer on the case, Deputy Inspector of the Dhunat Akbar Ali Police Station, confirmed the information Sunday morning. He said that Senior Judge Khalid Hasan of the Bogra Amli court took their statements Saturday night and ordered them to be sent to jail. Previously, they were arrested at their respective homes on the night of October 16 on the basis of a call list from the late Hasila Begum.
It is known that Hasila Begum used to earn a living begging in the villages all day long. At the end of the day, I would come home at night and put the begging rice in the pot. With legumes, potatoes or a couple of vegetables bought for little money. On the morning of October 13, the police recovered Hasila Begum’s body from fallen dirt near a rice paddy with a handkerchief around her neck.
It was later learned that he had returned home on the night of October 12 after begging and had gone to his sister’s house in the neighboring village of Anarpur. On his way back, he was suffocated to death by criminals. Sister Dhali Begum became the plaintiff in the murder case and filed a murder case at the police station on the night of October 13. Badsha Alam and Fazlul Haque were brought to court on the pretext of arrest in the case.
Hasila Begum is the daughter of Shukar Ali Mandal from the village of Ghugrapara in the Kalerpara union of the upazila. On the night of October 12, while returning from her sister’s house in a nearby town, the accused took her to a rice field and tried to rape her. After failing to do so, he was strangled to death.
Dhunat Police Inspector (investigation) Kamruzzaman Miah said that the two arrested defendants, Badsha Alam and Fazlul Haque, had made a confessional statement in court admitting responsibility for the failed murder of the beggar Hasila. They have been sent to the Bogra District Jail by order of the court. They have admitted that a few more people were involved in the killings. Legal action will be taken against them subject to investigation.
