Dhaka: Wholesale prices for onions, which have nearly doubled, have started to fall after India announced a sudden halt to onion exports. However, it has no effect on the retail market.
Wholesalers say that the price has dropped to Rs 5 per kg due to the introduction of fresh onions to the market, but there is no information on the retail trade. And retailers say they buy onions at higher prices from wholesalers. If you get a lower price there, the retail price will go down as well.
This image was seen on Thursday (September 18) while visiting Karwan Bazar, Kanthalbagan, Charulata Market, Malibagh and Khilgaon Bazar in the capital.
On this day, the wholesale price of onion (five kg) is sold at 430 Tk or Tk. The price of imported onion (LC) is 310 rupees or 72 rupees per kg.
On the other hand, retail pratikeji desi (King) onions from Kathalbagan, Moghbazar Charulata Market, Malibagh and Khilgaon Bazar are sold at a price of 95 to 100 rupees, desi onions at 100 to 110 rupees and imported onions are sold at 80 at 90 rupees.
Due to the increase in the onion price, TCB continues to sell onions at 30 Tk per kg in trucks. The sale will continue every day except the official closing day until the market situation returns to normal.
Buyers have expressed dissatisfaction with the price of the onion. Hamid Mia, a buyer at Karwan Bazar, said that the new LC onions have hit the market today, but traders are not cutting prices compared to that. The above people know very well how long they will hold us hostage and sell us at a higher price.
Ashraf Ali, a seller from Karwan Bazar, said that the price has dropped by Tk 5 per kg in one day. The price has dropped after seeing the arrival of LC onions.
Hasan, a trader at Charulata Market, said that he had bought at the old price, so he was selling at that price. However, if the onion has a new price, the price will also go down here.
