Who will lead Iran if Khamenei dies?

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is rumored to be ill. The point now is who will be the supreme leader if he becomes seriously ill or dies in terms of governance.

Khamenei, 61, is one of the most powerful and important countries in the Middle East.

As a result, who will succeed this leader is very important to Iran. It is also important in the Middle East and other countries in the world.

According to the BBC, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is Iran’s second-highest religious leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

A council of six religious leaders, called the Assembly of Experts, decides who will hold office.

The way the leader is selected

If Khomeini dies or is incapacitated, a three-member council will be established, including the president of Iran, the head of the judiciary and a theologian from the Council of Guardians. As long as the 6-member council of high-level Islamic religious leaders does not elect their successors, the council will continue to function. This council of experts is elected by popular vote for eight years. But before that, they must get the approval of the Guardian Council. The members of this Council of Guardians are elected directly or indirectly by the highest religious leader in the country.

These two councils or congregations have the influence of the supreme leader. For the past three decades, Ali Khamenei has insisted that the elected members of the expert council be Conservatives, who will follow his example in choosing his successor.

Once elected, the supreme leader can remain in office for life.

According to Iran’s constitution, the supreme leader must be an ayatollah, that is, a senior Shiite cleric. But when Ali Khamenei was elected, he was not an ayatollah. Then the law was changed so that he could assume this responsibility.

As a result, it is possible to change the law again if necessary. When the time comes to elect a new leader, the way is open to change the law in light of the political situation.

Who will Iran choose after Khamenei?

The political factions of the Islamic Republic are deeply interested in what the next successor will look like, but there is no powerful person in Iran who can lead a crisis.

He has a great influence on the loyal court of Ali Khamenei. Most of them are members of the Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s most powerful force.

If the Revolutionary Guards don’t want to see a candidate as the next Supreme Leader, or if they don’t like a candidate, there is a possibility that they will try to stop him.

There are rumors that a list of potential candidates has been drawn up, which is ultimately confidential. No one claims to know whose name is on that list.

However, based on observations or various incidents, it is said that Ali Khamenei’s preferred successor could be his son Mojtaba or the head of the judiciary, Ibrahim Raisi. If that’s correct then it must have some weight.

Meanwhile, Raisi’s predecessor Sadeq Larijani and current president Hassan Rouhani are believed to be interested in becoming the next supreme leader.
