Before the elections on December 30, 2016, I went to Tangail to see the status of the voting there. Prothom Alo Tangail’s representative, Kamnashish Shekhar, was also present. In Tangail, the two candidates were arguing more than voting at the time.
Ataur Rahman Khan, Awami League nominee, and independent candidate Abdul Latif Siddiqui. Ataur Ghatail and Latif Siddiqui competed from Kalihati in two electoral districts. Latif Siddiqui started a ‘death hunger strike’ claiming partiality on the part of the administration and was being treated at the hospital. And in Ghatail, whom the Awami League has nominated, their four sons are charged with a murder case. The two sons are still at large. A son on bail, another son in jail.
The freedom fighter and leader of the Tangail District Awami League, Faruk Ahmed, was killed on January 17, 2013. Three days after the incident, his wife Nahar Ahmed filed a case at the Tangail Sadar Police Station. In August 2014, detectives arrested Anisul Islam Raja on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Farooq.
Later, Raja’s confession revealed that then-MP Amanur Rahman Khan alias Rana and his younger brother Saniat Khan Bappa, the then vice president of Central BCL, were involved in the murder. Further investigation revealed the names of two more brothers.
