The country’s academics met with Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday night to overcome the crisis over the sculpture issue. The Interior Minister spoke about this in the Secretariat on Tuesday.

He said that a group of academics had committed to solving the problem through talks about the opposition to the construction of the sculpture of the Father of the Nation.

On Monday evening, a meeting was held at the residence of the 12 leading scholars in Dhanmondi under the chairmanship of Maulana Mahmudul Hasan. Maulana Farid Uddin Masood, Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, Obaidur Rahman Nadvi, Nur Ahmed Kashem, Ruhul Amin, Maulana. The minister said 12 people were present, including Nurul Islam and the minister of state and the secretary of religion.

The Interior Minister said: “You must have heard that on December 5, the country’s leading academics gathered at the call of Mahmudul Hasan.” There they discussed many issues in detail: the current situation in the country, their tasks.

The Home Secretary said that the academics had sent a letter to the Prime Minister, adding that they had sent a letter to the Honorable Prime Minister in this regard and also gave me a copy of that letter. An exchange meeting was held Monday night to discuss the letter’s topic.

He said there was a fruitful discussion and said: “We have discussed 5 proposals from the academics, there will be more discussions on them.”

“We hope we can reach a consensus through talks,” he said.

When asked what the consensus was and what the academics said about the sculpture, the minister said: “I have made it clear that we will discuss it in detail and the discussion has started. It will be resolved through discussion.”

As for the scholars’ proposal to build a minaret instead of a sculpture, the minister said that they have proposed building a minaret instead of a sculpture. Scholars propose to build a minaret in the name of Bangabandhu. Discussions continue about what will be done. So far no decision has been made.

When asked if the sculpture or the Mujib Minar would be erected, the minister said, “Why the sculpture?” It is not adored. We are saying, who was Bangabandhu for the new generation from birth to rebirth? To keep Bangabandhu’s contribution forever memorable, to keep it in the heart, the generation after birth wants to have Bangabandhu.

Stating that academics have pledged not to agitate, the interior minister said: “We think a beautiful environment has been created.” They have agreed with us that no one should destroy or disturb law and order. He told us to be vigilant to stop the Facebook propaganda. They (the scholars) have said that they will not make any moves. They want to finalize the 5 proposals through discussion.

When asked if the sculpture would be removed or construction stopped, the interior minister said the issue was also under discussion. The Bangabandhu sculpture is not worshiped.

He said that Bangabandhu has been sculpted for generation after generation to remember.

Asaduzzaman Kamal said: “We are talking about ourselves, the scholars have spoken along the lines of religion. So the guys will be a good solution through discussion. To be clear, there was no decision that there would be no sculpture, there was no decision that there would be a Mujib Minar. These will end through negotiations.

Regarding the academics’ proposal to meet with the Prime Minister, the Interior Minister said that the academics wanted to meet. The Honorable Prime Minister will meet if agreed. But you know Covid-19 all over the world … It is also our responsibility to keep the Prime Minister healthy.
