Shakib Al Hasan started a crab farm in Satkhira in 2016, but his father Masroor Reza discovered it in 2019. He told the Bengali Tribune that he knew nothing about the four-month wage arrears of farm workers. Shakib is currently in the United States.

On Monday (April 20), about 200 workers from Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm Limited staged a protest in Burigoalini of Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira demanding payment of four months of wage arrears. Later, a RAB patrol team eliminated the agitated workers. The workers said they were protesting because they were forced to pay their wages despite repeated guarantees.

Regarding the wage arrears, Shakib’s father, Masroor Reza, said: “Workers at the Shakib crab farm have reported on the protest by demanding a call from Dhaka.” After learning about it, I called Sagir Hossain Pavel, the caretaker and partner of the Shakib Crab Farm Project, several times, but I turned off his phone. As far as I know, there are several people, including Shakib. But it is not known how many there are. I have no interest in Shakib’s business. One day I went to the Shakib crab farm in Satkhira. The matter was resolved by Shakib’s friend Pavel. I live in Magura and work in a bank. We have to be busy with that all the time. ‘

He said: ‘Shakib is currently in the United States. I don’t know if he knows about the workers’ protest demanding wages, Shakib was not informed.

He added: “I didn’t know anything about the Shakib crab farm.” In December 2019, Shakib used to say to come back from Satkhira. From that day on I learned that Shakib has a crab farm in Satkhira. I work in a bank. There is a lot of pressure. I don’t even know where Shakib’s business is. I don’t want to know I’m not interested in business.

“Pavel’s father used to work with me,” he said of the Shakib farm. Since then, Shakib and Pavel have known each other. Pavel used to play cricket with Shakib and they have been friends ever since. Later they established a crab farm in Satkhira.

Regarding salary arrears, he said: “At the beginning of Corona, I called Pavel and asked him about the business. At the time he was saying that he was unable to send crabs abroad because of Corona. Again, those whom I have Sold they have a debt of Rs 60 lakh. Shakib called the creditors but they did not respond. Even then I paid the workers. I will pay the remaining salary quickly and keep the business closed for now. He did not say anything to me after that.

Mahidul Islam, a worker at the company’s hatchery, said there is no job anywhere because of Corona. There is no food at home. Spend the day with great difficulty. The salary has not been paid in the last four months.

Monowara, another worker, said the payment for the past four months was off. So I was forced to go outside.

Bhabatosh Kumar Mandal, President of the Burigoalini Union, said: “I heard about the workers’ protest outside the Shakib Al Hasan crab farm and sent UP member Kamrul Islam to fix it.” I ask Shakib to quickly resolve the issue so that he is not discredited as an international standard cricket player.

UP member of Burigowalini Union’s Kamrul Islam said he had discussed the matter with Sagir Hossain Pavel, the firm’s caretaker. He said the workers would be paid before April 30.

When Sagir Hossain Pavel’s personal mobile phone number was contacted, her phone was found switched off.
