Police arrested Saifur Rahman, 26, the ringleader of the incident, within 36 hours of the gang rape of his wife while she was tied up in the dormitory of MC College in Sylhet.
Shortly afterwards, Arjun Laskar, the fourth defendant in the gang rape case, was arrested in the Mantala border area in Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj.
However, the remaining six defendants in the case have yet to be arrested. Meanwhile, Chhatra League leader Rabiul Hasan, No. 5 defendant in the gang rape case, and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, No. 6 defendant, were active on Facebook until last night.
The two defendants also posted on Facebook claiming their innocence.
The defendant Mahfuzur Rahman Masum wrote around 9 am on Saturday: “I am not involved in such a heinous act.” Kill me publicly if you get proof of stake. There is faith only in God. God will absolve me. But God will judge you for driving me to suicide before I am proven innocent.
Then Rabiul Hasan posted at 10:40 in the morning.
He writes: “Honorable Conscious Citizens, I am Rabiul Hasan. I am a student at MC College. Many of you know, many of you may know what kind of person I am. With the gang rape in MC’s dorm on Friday, who or what made the news in many online media about me, I am a student at MC College, but never in that hostel, I still study from home I beg of you all, I am not involved in this brutal gang rape, we have families. If I am involved in this heinous act, may I be given exemplary punishment in public. I am not involved in this work in any way. I demand exemplary punishment by arresting all the beasts who gang-raped the housewife in the MC College dorm.
When asked why the defendants were not being arrested despite being active on Facebook, Shahporan’s Police Officer in Charge (CO) Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said: “We are doing everything we can to arrest them.” The operation is taking place in different places.
