The busy canal on the existing road in the capital Panthapath will be restored. Through this, the city dwellers will be able to go to Gulshan-Baridhara from Dhanmondi Lake by boat or water taxi via Hatirjheel. The Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) has taken such an initiative. The long-distance waterway will be built by restoring the evicted capital’s Panthapath canal and connecting Lake Dhanmondi and Hatirjheel.
This Panthapath road is known to be a canal even in the 1960s. There were at least 15 km more of canals, including this one. Where the road is currently paved through a box culvert. As a result, the channels have lost their original existence.
The canals in the capital Dhaka are primarily owned by the Dhaka district administration. But in the 1980s, Dhaka WASA took over the responsibility of maintaining the canal. In 2001, WASA filled most of the canals and undertook the project to build box culverts in them. This does not reduce water retention but increases it. As the project failed, on June 15, 2017, ECNEC decided to open the canal sewer in Dhaka. Dhaka WASA, RAJUK and City Corporation were then instructed to restore the canal.
In this situation, RAJUK has taken the initiative to rescue the Panthapath canal. Lake Dhanmondi will connect with Hatirjheel through the canal. RAJUK will finance the rescue of the canal. If Lake Hatirjheel is connected to Lake Dhanmondi, a continuous waterway system of about eleven kilometers will be established from Baridhara to Dhanmondi.
According to the decision of the board meeting of the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), the company will rehabilitate the Panthapath canal and develop the canal area to connect Hatirjheel Lake and Dhanmondi Lake by water. The resolution at the board meeting said that there is no alternative to protect the reservoirs by ensuring adequate habitability of the Dhaka metropolis. However, due to various illegal occupations, the canals, ponds and floodplains of this city are filling up. To remedy this situation, on the one hand, it is necessary to carry out strict surveillance and eviction operations, on the other hand, it is equally important to take the initiative to restore the reservoirs.
In addition, he said that the two notable reservoirs in the Dhaka metropolis are Hatirjheel Lake and Dhanmondi Lake. If the Panthapath canal can be restored, a river connection will be established between these two large reservoirs. This will increase the amount of deposits on the one hand and improve the drainage system of Dhanmondi, Shukrabad, Kawran Bazar, etc. on the other hand. The tendency to flooding in the city will decrease. The possibilities of groundwater recharge will increase. Above all, the habitability of the area will be improved. Civic amenities of the area can be created by providing a simple linear park, walkway, jogging lane, bike lane, rest area, etc. in the area adjacent to the canal and the canal.
In addition, he said that since Hatirjheel Lake is connected with Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara Lake. In that case, if the connection between Hatirjheel Lake and Dhanmondi Lake is established by restoring the Panthapath Canal, an uninterrupted waterway system of about eleven kilometers will be established from Baridhara to Dhanmondi. Which will play an effective role in reducing traffic congestion in Dhaka city.
It is known that the project feasibility study, the completion of the detailed physical study and the cost estimate of the Detailed Plan of the Action Area for the rescue of the canal and the development of the canal area were approved at the board meeting. by RAJUK. Send letters requesting instructions from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to assume the cost of conducting the feasibility study from government sources. Subsequently, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works issued a letter on July 15 instructing that the project could be implemented with RAJUK’s own funds.
According to RAJUK sources, there are currently 15 km of sewers in the capital Dhaka. 8 km south of the city corporation. These include Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel from Russell Square via Green Road, Motaleb Plaza in Hatirpul to Sonargaon Hotel, Panthapath to Paribagh, Ibrahimpur Bazar to Mirpur Baunia Khal, Segundobagicha to Arambagh, a few more roads to Bangladesh Bank, Khilgaon to Khilgaon. Exist. Almost the entire Panthapath from Russell Square to the Sark Fountain is at Box Calvert.
Ashraful Islam, project manager for the Detailed Area Plan (DAP), said steps have been taken to restore the canal from Russell Square in Dhanmondi to Hatirjheel. We will entrust BUET to carry out a feasibility study in this regard.
He added that there is no channel. There is a box culvert in place of the canal. There is also a path above. We will open the channel. It will connect Hatirjheel with Dhanmondi.
He said there is a way. What will be the impact of traffic in the vicinity? No matter how many channels, the drainage capacity will be fine. Also, there are buildings in the vicinity. In this reality, how wide should the channel be? We will submit a proposal to BUET for a feasibility study on these general issues.
Furthermore, after the regular cabinet meeting at the Secretariat on July 31, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina instructed the Minister of Local Government to rescue the canal in the capital. He said box sewers should also be opened if necessary. A small overpass can be built over the culvert for traffic.
