War crimes: three sentenced to death in Mymensingh

One of the nine defendants in the case has been acquitted. This is the first time that one of the 114 defendants in 42 cases has so far been acquitted by the International Criminal Court.

A three-member International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) headed by Judge Shahinur Islam announced the verdict on Thursday. The other two members of the court are Judge Amir Hossain and Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar.

Five of the defendants were present in court during the verdict. The trial of the case continues to show the other four defendants as fugitives.

In the case it is alleged that they joined Razakar’s forces during the liberation war in 1971 and joined the Pakistani army in various villages of Mymensingh to commit crimes such as kidnapping, detention, torture and murder.

The court ordered them to start a trial in March 2016 on four counts of crimes against humanity.

After hearing the arguments of both parties, the case was awaiting verdict (CAV) on January 26 of last year.

But due to the coronavirus epidemic, the court could not rule on any case of crimes against humanity in 1971. It finally set the date for the verdict of the case last Tuesday.

According to him, the verdict was announced in court after 10:30 am on Thursday.

What is the verdict of the accused?

Among the accused in jail. Shamsuzzaman, alias Abul Kalam, has been sentenced to death on counts 1 and 4 and fugitives AFM Faizullah and Abdur Razzak Mandal have been sentenced to death on all four counts.

Following the investigation, on February 20, 2016, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) issued a report against him.

Charges were brought against him on March 4, 2016, alleging murder, robbery, arson, kidnapping, detention, torture and extortion.

After the charges were filed, the hearing began on May 10 of that year. A total of 16 witnesses testified in the case.

After taking tests, the discussion started on September 15, 2019 and ended on January 26 of last year. The verdict of the case was expected the same day.

The last was on December 11, 2019, the former leader of the Boalia camp in Rajshahi. The verdict in the war crimes case of Abdus Sattar aka Tipu Sultan reached the court. In that verdict, Tipu Sultan was sentenced to death by the war crimes court.

Eight of the 1,114 defendants in 42 cases have so far died at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). A total of 103 people have been convicted, of which 8 war criminals have received the maximum penalty.
