Onion import through Healy land port has been suspended since last Monday due to Bangladesh’s ban on onion exports. Across the border, about a hundred trucks loaded with onions wait to enter the country. Importers in the port of Healy are concerned that onion stuck in the past 4 days is already spoiling.
Making sure that onions would be imported, the merchants went to the port zero point in the morning and waited and asked. On the news that an onion truck will come in in an hour or two, the onions are sold at Rs 50-60 per kg at Healy Market.
Although the Indian government insists that it will not supply onions to Bangladesh, it will only supply onions that were tendered last Sunday. You hear those things. India did not export onions all day Thursday in anticipation of this. Whether or not they will export the onions bought by importers, importers of raw materials in the Hili land port are concerned. Onion importers are awaiting import on Thursday, as there has been no import since Wednesday morning.
But the Healy port exporters said they couldn’t export onions on Thursday because they had not been cleared by customs. However, they assure that the import will be done on Saturday.
Meanwhile, prices are starting to fall in the wholesale and retail markets on the news that onions are entering the country. The onion that was sold on Tuesday ranged from Rs 65 to Rs 70 per kg. Now the onion is sold on Thursday between 50 and 60 rupees per kg.
Harun Ur Rashid Harun, president of Healy’s Inland Port Importers Group, said that around 10,000 metric tons of onions had been LC as of last Sunday. Last Monday, the government of India stopped the export of onions due to Hotkari’s decision. As a result, onion importers at Healy’s land port have suffered huge financial losses.
He added that last year too, the Indian government abruptly stopped onion exports to Bangladesh. The onion traders were sitting on the road. Again the same situation. The onion truck that was offered on the other side has been stuck for 4 days.
