Law Minister Anisul Haque said that the ‘Ordinance on the Use of Information Technology of the Court, 2020’, which was promulgated to carry out legal proceedings through the use of information technology, is a milestone and has allowed Bangladesh to enter a new chapter.
The minister made the comments in a video message from his Banani residence in Dhaka on Sunday (May 10) night in response to several questions about the virtual court.
Anisul Haque said that a few days ago, the United States Supreme Court decided to establish a virtual court to administer it due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. In that case, I can say that Bangladesh is not far away.
He said that after the amendment of the Evidence Law, judicial functions can begin with the powers granted in this ordinance. Then, our lower courts will be able to hear trials, testimonies, and arguments using information technology and issue sentences.
The minister said the country has not had a virtual court since before. So we have no experience in this matter. However, special training for judges was held from the beginning of the idea of formulating an ordinance in this regard. He hopes that with this trained knowledge, they can do other things, including short bail hearings.
