A court has sentenced six people to death in a case of hacking to death of four members of the same family at Sultan Ahmed’s home in the Diadanga village of Bhurungamari upazila in Kurigram. One of the seven defendants in the case has been acquitted.

District and session judge Abdul Mannan delivered the verdict at noon Tuesday. Immediately after the verdict was announced, the defendant vandalized the barracks and insulted the judge. Later, the police took them to jail.

Among the six defendants in the case, Mamtaz Uddin, Nazrul Islam Majnu, Amir Hamza, Zakir Hossain, Jalal Gazi and Hasmat Ali were sentenced to death. Another defendant, Nainul Islam, has been acquitted. Among the convicted defendants is Jalal Gazi, a fugitive.

Abraham Lincoln was the state attorney in the case and five attorneys, including Azizur Rahman Dulu, were on the side of the defendants.

On January 14, 2014, a group of masked men entered Sultan Mia’s home in the Diadanga village of Bhurungamari in the middle of the night. They attacked Sultan Mandal, his granddaughter Romana, Anika and his wife Hajara to death with sharp weapons. The following day, Hafizur Rahman, son of the murdered Sultan, presented a case to the Bhurungamari Police Station.

According to sources in the case, the defendant Mamtaz Uddin had a dispute with his younger brother, Sultan Ahmed. Mamtaz Uddin rented a contract to give 5 lakh rupees and one bigha of land to convicts convicted of killing Sultan Ahmed.

After the verdict was announced, Rafiq Ahmed, a relative of the victims, said: “We are satisfied with this verdict. We want the verdict to be implemented soon.

Attorney General (PP) Abraham Lincoln said: “The verdict was announced as soon as possible. This trial has established justice. After the verdict was announced, the arrogant behavior of the convicts such as the fence vandalism incident shows how miserable they are.
