US threatens to tighten UN blockade of Iran

The United States has said it will lift the UN embargo on Iran. On Saturday, the country unilaterally announced that anyone who violates the blockade policy would be sanctioned.

Meanwhile, analysts say the announcement raises fears that the United States may be left alone, but that international concerns will mount.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said in a statement that the United States welcomes the return of all previous UN sanctions against Iran.

According to him, the announcement is effective from 0000 GMT on Sunday. Meanwhile, the administration of US President Donald Trump has vowed to punish any UN member state for violating the policy. And the nature of this punishment is quite dire. Because that state will no longer be allowed to enter the United States financial system or market.

The foreign minister also said that in the next few days the measures to be taken by violators of the policy will be announced. Meanwhile, there are only 45 days left before the US presidential election. Trump is expected to make the announcement at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

The decision to lift all sanctions against Iran is leaving the United States alone. Because Europe’s allies, including China and Russia, are also opposed to this move.

In a joint letter to the UN Security Council on Friday, France, Britain and Germany said any decision to reimpose a blockade would invalidate the law.

It should be noted that the sanctions imposed on Iran for attempting to develop nuclear weapons were lifted in 2015 under an international agreement. But Trump withdrew the United States from the deal in 2016, saying the deal made under former US President Barack Obama was not enough. Even Washington’s bilateral blockades have intensified.
