The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered uranium worth approximately 55 million rupees from a house in the Rampura area of the capital Dhaka.
The RAB said in a statement Wednesday that they raided a home in East Rampura with a tip. Approximately 55 crore taka of uranium was recovered from the house at that time. Three uranium traders have also been arrested.
During preliminary questioning, the detainees told RAB that they were illegally purchasing uranium from various sources. For a long time they were engaged in buying and selling uranium.
RAB-10 Deputy Commander Major Shahriar Ziaur Rahman said: “The case is still under investigation. We are trying to capture the full cycle of where they bought uranium and to whom they sold it. He declined to elaborate as the matter is under investigation.
The leather box in which the uranium was found bears the inscription, Metallic Element of Atomic Energy Uranium, atomic weight 222.06 (A) 2 lb Labpros. Remote controls, manual books, gas masks, electric meters, rubber droppers, and more were also found.
Previously, there were arrests for selling uranium in Bangladesh.
In August 2014, the Dhaka Detective Police arrested 11 people involved in the sale and purchase of radioactive uranium in Dhaka. Uranium weighing two pounds was also allegedly seized from them, police said.
