The eviction of squatters from the banks of the Buriganga stopped midway for mysterious reasons. The all-day operation was supposed to continue on Monday, but stopped abruptly at 2.30pm. Witnesses said the eviction was called off as they approached the Chan Sardar market and Chan Sardar Cold Storage Ltd., owned by Dhaka-6 MP Haji Mohammad Selim.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has launched an operation to eradicate the illegal structures under the Second Buriganga Bridge in the embankment area of the Chawkbazar Police Station in the capital towards Kamalbagh.
The sources said that the operation would continue until 4 pm on Monday as the day before. The places to be evicted were marked with BIWTA property. Among them were parts of the Chan Sardar Cold Storage and Tiger Cement showroom.
The multiple evicted merchants told Jugantar: “We are innocent merchants. I have been doing transportation business near the dam for a long time paying tribute to various people. We have been evicted due to lack of energy. But the local deputy is powerful. As soon as it hit the market, the operation was halted due to lobbying pressure.
When asked about the sudden halt to the operation, BIWTA’s Dhaka River Port Deputy Director (port), Gulzar Ali, told Jugantar that the magistrate on duty had stopped the eviction unit due to a traffic jam on the road. from the embankment. The campaign is usually carried out from morning until 4 in the afternoon. The operation was carried out until 3:00 p.m. that day. Stating that the operation did not stop due to pressure from any sector, Gulzar Ali said: “We had a two-day program.” The operation will be carried out again in time.
Executive magistrate Mahbub Jamil, who led the eviction campaign, told Jugantar: “Our objective has been achieved, so the operation has been declared completed.” All interested parties will be notified prior to conducting an eviction campaign in the future.
According to BIWTA sources, 150 structures including 15 two-story buildings, 20 one-story buildings, 25 semi-finished houses, 75 tin houses and 5 walls have been evicted from Babubazar to Soarighat. The river bank recovered there is an acre and a half. In addition, the floating tents were removed from Babubazar to Soarighat in the interest of the smooth movement of passengers and vehicles.
