But I did not know that there is so much money. He also tried, but couldn’t open the closet. Angry, he planned to attack and steal cash.
The investigation of the case has been carried out by talking with the officials concerned and looking at the documents related to the case.
Investigators say Rabiul, a former gardener and cleaner at UNO’s home, was unable to open the closet. He beat Waheeda and his father, Omar Ali Sheikh, with a hammer and took 50,000 rupees out of the closet. If he could open the closet, he could take all the cash and gold decorations.
On the night of 2 September, an unidentified malefactor entered the home of Ghoraghat officer Upazila Nirbahi Wahida Khanam in Dinajpur and beat her and her father Omar Ali Sheikh with a hammer. Two days after unrest broke out across the country, the Elite Force arrested three people named RAB Asadul, Nabirul and Santu and said they were involved. Asadul, Nabirul and Santu had entered the house for the purpose of stealing, RAB said. But a week later, on September 12, Rangpur Range DIG Devdas Bhattacharya told a press conference that Mali Rabiul, who was fired from the UN office, had admitted to being involved only in the incident. He also said that the hammer used in the attack was also recovered. Later, Rabiul was placed in preventive detention for six days.

The way Rabiul entered UNO’s house
Sources said that Rabiul Islam, a former gardener at UNO’s residence, lives in Bhimrul Para de Biral upazila. In the morning, he cycled to the office of the deputy commissioner in Dinajpur. After finishing his work there, he went to Murad’s salon on the corner of the sixth floor of the city around 11pm. There he played mobile games for a long time. Rabiul wants to borrow 100 rupees from Murad around 1.30 pm. But Murad did not lend money. Rabiul tells Murad to go out on a special mission and he wants to have the bike in his shop. Murad said there was no arrangement to keep the bikes in his shop and asked them to store them in Ainul’s garage next door. Rabiul kept his bike in Ainul’s garage at the time. He told her not to come back at night saying that he was going to do a special job. Rabiul agreed to pay Rs 10 per day and Rs 15 per night to keep Ainul’s bicycle. He went to the Phulbari bus stop in town around 3pm.
Citing Rabiul’s questioning, officials involved in the investigation said that Rabiul went to the Phulbari bus stop in the city of Dinajpur, boarded Tripti Paribahan and got off at the Ghoraghat Raniganj Bazar bus stop. From there, they wandered outside the Osmanpur Upazila facility until 1 a.m. Later, he entered Upazila Parishad’s premises by climbing the western wall of the old mosque.
Citing CCTV footage of the Upazila Parishad and Rabiul’s interrogation, the sources of the investigation said that at 1:19 pm, Rabiul observed whether there was a doorman in front of the guard room. He then entered the residence premises at the top of the west wall of the UN residence in front of the upazila government offices. After observing the residence for a while, at 1:48 pm, he brought a ladder that hung from the side of the loft at the back of the residence. At 2:02 he went to the roundabout with a hammer and took a chair. He could not go up to the second floor of the building with the chair and the ladder.
First try failed, second time was successful
During questioning, Rabiul said that he decided to leave the chair and ladder after failing to go up to the second floor in the first phase. CCTV footage also showed him leaving the chair at the roundabout and on the west side of the Moiti residence at 2:26 p.m. At 2:38 a.m., Rabiul was seen returning to the roundabout empty-handed and turning off the security lights outside the residence. At 3:29 pm on CCTV, he was again seen walking towards the residence with a ladder and a bag under the mango tree.
During questioning, Rabiul said that when he was about to leave without success, he thought that the key to Kechi’s door on the second floor might be with the house security guard, Palash. So he went to the guard room and saw Palash sniffing and sleeping. From the guard room take a lock and some keys and first close the guard room from the outside. But Kechi couldn’t open the door and took the tool from the front of the guard room. He climbed the ladder with his chair and tools together and entered the second floor of the UNO residence with a fan.
According to Rabiul, after entering the bathroom, he noticed that the bathroom latch was closed from inside the bedroom. Pushing, he broke the latch and stepped into the bedroom. UNO found out and called her father. Rabiul immediately began hitting UNO on the head with a hammer. His father got there after UNO Waheeda fell unconscious. Rabiul also hit him with a hammer and knocked him to the ground. Rabiul asks UNO’s father for the keys to the closet. He threatened to kill his grandson if he did not give him the key.
