At a press conference on Sunday, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen highlighted various aspects of the award titled ‘UNESCO-Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Prize in the field of creative economy’.

He said the decision was made unanimously at the 210th autumn session of UNESCO’s Executive Board, which ended on December 11. This is the first time that a UN body has presented an international award on behalf of Bangabandhu.

UNESCO presents international awards with financial support from member states in recognition of their contributions in various fields, including education, culture, science, and technology.

The Minister said that 23 UNESCO International Prizes have been presented on behalf of internationally renowned individuals and organizations under the jurisdiction of UNESCO. This is the first time that UNESCO has presented an international award on behalf of Bangladesh or any other eminent person from Bangladesh.

The Foreign Minister said: “This award, presented by a UN body like UNESCO, will create an opportunity to spread the Bangabandhu way of life around the world, inspiring global cultural activists to develop a creative economy.

“The fact that Bangladesh and Bangabandhu are the same has flourished in the award title. We believe this award will play a special role in image and branding in Bangladesh.”

Chancellor Momen said: “This award will be awarded every two years, which means US $ 50,000. The award will be presented for the first time during the 41st General Assembly of UNESCO in November 2021.”

Under UNESCO rules, the award will be awarded three times in six years in the first phase, Foreign Minister Momen said. It can then be renewed on a negotiated basis.

He said that a proposal to present the award was sent to the Director-General of UNESCO in August 2019.
