The Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has revealed the murder of four members of the same family in the Khalsi village of Kalaroa upazila in Satkhira. Shahinur Rahman’s younger brother, Raihanul Islam, was involved in the murder. He killed his older brother, his niece and his nephew one by one due to a family dispute. The knife used in the murder has been recovered. During questioning, Raihanul said, “Satan trusted me, so I did.”

Additional DIG from CID’s Khulna Ranch Omar Farooq held a press conference at CID’s office in Satkhira on Wednesday afternoon to unravel the mystery of the murder case. He said that Raihanul, the younger brother of the murdered Shahinur Rahman, was arrested as a suspect. He was then sent to preventive detention for questioning. During questioning, he admitted his guilt and gave details of the incident. The brutal murders have been organized mainly due to the conflict with the brother and sister-in-law. Shahinur Rahman’s younger brother, Raihanul Islam, did not do any work. He had no means to earn a living. His wife also left him about 10 months ago. Since then, he used to eat and drink in the family of his older brother Shahinur Rahman. Brothers and sisters used to argue about it. On Wednesday October 14, Bhabi scolded him. Bhabi told Raihanul: ‘I don’t work, I just eat.’ After hearing these words, he decided to kill Bhabi.

Khulna Ranch additional DIG Omar Farooq said that Raihanul bought sleeping pills and two quick drinks from a nearby store that night. Returning home around 8:30 pm, he quickly mixed sleeping pills and gave them to Bhabi and his nephews to eat. Later, around 1.30pm, his older brother, Shahinur Rahman, returned from the fish farm. So Raihanul was watching TV. Then the older brother scolded Raihanul a lot. The brother said, ‘You can’t pay the electricity bill, why are you watching TV?’ He then mixed sleeping pills in another speed bottle and gave it to his brother to eat. Raihanul told him, ‘Cool your head, eat it. I’ll pay the electric bill for this month. Then his brother Shahinur Rahman ate it.

The CID official further said that Raihanul entered his brother’s house around 3 to 4 pm wearing a lungi, taking a towel and covering the roof of the house with his naked body. He beat his older brother Shahinur Rahman with a knife while he was sleeping. Then he grabbed her by the neck with a towel. He cut off his brother’s ribs and tied his legs to confirm his death. Then Bhabir came into the room and hit him. After hitting Bhabi, she screamed and her two sons woke up. Despite his reluctance, Raihan killed the two children along with Bhabi.

During questioning, Raihanul Islam said that he had no control over himself at the time of the incident. He said, ‘Satan has put his weight on me, so I did.’ According to the information provided during the interrogation, the knife used in the murder was recovered from the pond. The towel was also recovered from Raihanul’s home. Raihan added that he was the only one involved in the incident.

The CID arrested Abdur Razzak (28), Abdul Malek (35) and Asadul Islam (28) from the village on Tuesday in connection with the murder. Razzak and Malek are neighbors of the murdered Shahinur Rahman and the employee of Asadul’s kennel Islam Shahinur. They have been sent to court seeking preventive detention.

Regarding the others arrested, CID official Omar Farooq said: ‘The investigation is ongoing. However, so far no evidence or signs of their involvement have been found. Only one person is involved in the incident. Otherwise, they will not be sent to preventive detention.

Shahinur Rahman, 40, his wife Sabina Khatun, 30, their son Siam Hossain Mahi, 9, and their daughter Tasnim, 7, were massacred inside the house in the early hours of October 15. Another six-month-old baby, Maria Sultana, was left without her mother’s body. Shahinur Rahman’s mother-in-law, who was killed in the incident, filed a murder case at the Kalaroa police station that same night. The case was turned over to the CID. The CID held a press conference to unravel the mystery seven days after the shocking murder.
