The deceased were identified as Dulal Mia, 28, the son of Abdul Malek from the village of Nishchintpur, near the Jaigir bus stop in Mithapukur upazila, and Rokon, 23, the son of Abu Bakkar from the same area. Rubel, 25, son of Abdur Rauf from the nearby town of Durgapur and Sohan, 19, son of Shahidul Islam, Mamun, 22, son of Tutul Miah from Nishchintpur village and driver of the Babu van were admitted At Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Asaduzzaman Asad, secretary general of the Jagir Motor Workers Union, said that, as every year, some local youth took the initiative to awaken people in Sahri on the occasion of Holy Ramadan. For this purpose, they went home in a van with a microphone from the market at the Jaigir bus stop around 12 pm on Friday. They were supposed to go home at half past one or two after dinner. At that time, a truck caught up with them as they crossed the Rangpur-Dhaka road in front of the Gyan Bikash Shishu Niketan school near the bus stop. Later, the locals saw them lying on the spot and reported to the police. Upon receiving the news, the police rescued the wounded from the scene and took them to the hospital.

In confirming the accident, local UP member Shahadat Hossain Saju said they were unable to confirm the truck’s address. Two died on the spot and four others were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

The Mithapukur SI Bishnupad Roy Police Station said an unidentified truck on its way from Rangpur to Dhaka crushed them and fled. The injured are receiving treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
