A member of the army was wounded in an armed attack on an army patrol at Naniyarchar in Rangamati. Two terrorists were killed when the army returned fire. The incident took place in the Rauf Tila area of the Sabekshyang union in Naniyarchar upazila on Tuesday afternoon. Later that night, Rangamati Police Superintendent Alamgir Kabir confirmed the incident.
According to police sources, 20 Birs army personnel from the Rangamati Sadar area went to raid a terrorist hideout in Rauf Tila around 4:30 pm yesterday. 28-year-old Private Shahabuddin was shot dead when he opened fire on an army patrol from another nearby area. Two of the attackers were killed when the army returned fire. The wounded Shahabuddin was first taken to the Rangamati Combined Military Hospital (CMH). From there he was taken to Chittagong CMH by helicopter.
Police Superintendent Alamgir Kabir said: “There was an armed attack on an army patrol. We later learned that a member of the army was injured and two terrorists were killed. The police have gone there.
The two were said to be members of the UPDF, a regional party in the hills, law enforcement officials said. An AK-22 weapon was recovered from the scene.
However, UPDF spokeswoman Angya Marma stated: “We are not aware of such an incident.”
